Ever wonder what your digital appetite was like? Recently, I decided to track my digital media usage. I took note of what sites I visited, recorded how much time I spent on each one, and wondered if I was going to learn something new. Long story short, I wasn't surprised by anything. Let’s start from the beginning.
On February 27th, 2021, I hopped onto Youtube at 3:00 pm. I watched a video by The Saint and The Sinner. I then switched gears and started watching CBS New York clips. Come 5:05 pm, I shut down the Youtube app, so I can go outside. I took a long walk with Jill Scott. From 5:10 pm to 7:35 pm, I used the Spotify app as I walked around my hometown. I listened to Marvin Gaye’s What’s Happening Brother, The Jacksons’ Show You the Way to Go, Blackman by Jeff Parker (and a lot of other tracks from my ‘On Repeat’ playlist).
At 7:35 pm, I was back home and used my laptop. I queued up Patreon. I watched a few videos before closing out the page at 9:15 pm. At 9:15 pm, I began homework by signing onto Blackboard. I took a break from homework 15 minutes later. I then proceeded to open Youtube again. I listened to some songs, which I subsequently added to my Spotify playlist.
I then surfed through Reddit at the same time. I started homework again at 9:51 pm while Youtube played in the background. I finished my assignments at 10:21, and I proceeded to open thecoli.com. Come 10:50 pm, I exited thecoli.com to work on a side project I have on google docs. From 10:50 pm to 12: 55 am, I work on my project with no Youtube, Spotify, or anything playing in the background. I remain focused solely on google docs. Come 1 am, I finished with google docs, and I hopped on Youtube again. This time, I ended around 2:42 am. I went to bed around 3:00 am and woke up at noon. Come 3:00 pm, I hopped on Youtube as I did more homework assignments.
In all, I wasn’t shocked by my digital media consumption. I’ve been making a concerted effort to save my eyes from the damage of the screens, so that’s where my walks come into play. However with Covid still raging and the wintry forces as bitter as ever, I’m indoors for most of the day. Spotify and Youtube are the two sites I visit most often because of their versatility. I watch the news on Youtube or the various content creators who pique my interest. I can listen to entire discographies on Spotify or be educated by the manifold of podcasts the platform offers. I wouldn’t change a thing about my digital media appetite.
